Taking a mini break to Amsterdam by myself was honestly one of the best decisions I have made in life. If anyone has the chance to go on holiday and on a little adventure by themselves...I highly recommend it. I also used 'Air BnB' for the first time, instead of staying in a hostel or hotel - it was just really nice staying in someone's home. I really enjoyed my trip and so I thought I would let you know what I got up to and share some of my favourite shots and from the last few days.
So I had a list of things I wanted to do - some rather touristy things but I mostly just wanted to wander around, soak up the city and take photographs - I did a lot of 'spot the tourist' and trying to capture photographs of people taking selfies and I even wrote down some notes of funny things I overheard people saying. Being alone and in an environment I am not used to made me feel oddly creative and inspired - for some crazy reason I didn't take a notebook or pen with me (like the ONE time) but I am hoping that the inspiration last for a little while longer.
The day I arrived in 'Dam I was super grumpy for ages and I was wandering around hating everything because I had an awful flight over, despite it being 45 minutes the turbulence was dire, it was raining, everywhere smelled like weed (which I despise the smell of) and I was damn HUNGRY. Once I ate something I was fine, and I realised how beautiful everything was (mostly when you get away from the hideously touristy parts of the city) I visited the Sex Museum - Perfect - and went to Lambiek which is Europe's oldest comic book store - I bought the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer (I will link to some info if you are interested it is super good!)
The next day I decided I deserved a lay in, got some food from a local supermarket (including loads of goodies that I wanted to try - FYI I can never eat an oreo that isn't smothered in white chocolate ever again...Oreos are ruined, they are just nothing if they are not covered in white chocolate!) I sat by a Canal and read my graphic novel and also laughed at some German girls who screamed, several times, when a duck quacked - they were high. I also overheard a tour guide on a boat stating that 'there is a church, brothel and nursery school all in one corner' Oh Amsterdam.
The Thursday was the most intense day, after waiting in line for over two hours I got to look around the Secret Annex in Anne Frank's House. I 100% cried, it was all very...real. It also just felt really strange that there were a lot of young children looking around too - How could they understand what was going on, some of them were a similar age to what Anne would have been and younger. I may be completely atheist, but I cannot deny my Jewish heritage - it was an emotional day. It was really hot on this day too so I decided to take a canal boat ride - which was awesome. Super calm and relaxing until our boat driver purposefully hit another canal boat and had a huge argument with the driver, it was really exciting but all in Dutch so I had NO idea why he did it.
The last day was really bad - for me anyway - it was SO hot that I didn't leave my flat until 2 in the afternoon and being..me, I had only packed all black clothing so I was all hot and sweaty and stressed out. I spent ages walking and trying to decide what to eat that by the time I got to the museum I wanted to go to it was shutting in 20 minutes time - I was getting frustrated because I had 2 gnat bites and my hayfever was so bad, super itchy eyes and sneezes (its okay I went to the museum the next day before my flight home - pretty intense, lots of art, yet I still had more fun listening to other people's anecdotes and thoughts) I stayed out and read some of my book and listened to music because I was waiting to go to gig. A gig which I realised was not a band that I had hoped to be seeing but a drum and bass night - I decided to just go home - my eyes were itchy, it had started thunder, lightening and raining by this point and I just wanted to go to bed.
All good vibes though - I bought an adult colouring book and some pencils at the airport and listened to both of Louis CK's stand ups before my flight - I was just sat in Mcdonalds giggling I thought that was a good day!
I thought I would share some of my snaps that I took and posted on Instagram too - Amsterdam is a truly beautiful city, it is so colourful and fully of so much life and history. Go check out more pretty pictures and stuff on my Instagram !!
