Hair Dye Routine

I get asked so many questions about my hair; what dyes I use, how I look after it, and so I thought I would share some of my hair favourites with you. Granted I am not a hairdresser and if anyone is thinking of drastically changing their hair colour I would advise seeking some professional assistance, but here is how I have done.

I have been known to change my hair colour rather frequently and this year I have had a few rather drastic changes; I started the year ginger, then went varying shades of orange and red, then back to brunette for a month or so, of course I missed the ginger so went back, I then wanted to dress as Hit Girl for Halloween and while trying to go purple I also ended up with lilac hair at some point too. I had been struggling with a blonde/grey colour for a month or so and have now gone back to ginger, it is my favourite. I have tried and tested several different auburn/ginger/red colours out and my favourite is a shade called 'Mango Intense Copper' by L'Oreal Feria. The colour is very bright on my bleached blonde base and tends to hold a lot longer than other dyes I have used.

Once upon a time my hair was so dark that it would take a good two or three bleach sessions before my hair was light enough to go ginger (of course it didn't have to be blonde exactly, there is that gingery blonde stage that I found took to a red/ginger dye rather well). When it comes to doing my roots I have always used Jerome Russell B Blonde Bleach, but now days when it comes to doing my roots I just use Live Colour XXL Absolute Platinum Blonde, my hair is obviously a lot more porous and damaged than it used to be so it doesn't need such a strong substance on it.

In terms of getting lilac hair I did leave the ginger to fade for quite some time, it looked blonde with a pale orange tint in it by the end. I then but the Live XXL Absolute Platinum Blonde on all of my hair to give it a bright even platinum colour that would allow for the dye to sit on my hair. For the lilac I used a semi permanent dye from the brand directionz. I absolutely adore this brand, they have a brilliant range of colours available for real cheap, I have been using them for years. First off I used their white toner to take any copper hints out of my hair so it was really like a blank canvas (side note: don't leave toner on for too long as it can turn you hair a slight tint of purple..in my case that wasn't much of an issue as it was the colour I intended to go) For the lilac colour I combined directionz violet (which is a beautifully bright colour when applied on bleached hair) and I diluted it with white conditioner. I then applied this to my hair and left for around half an hour before rinsing.

I will be posting again soon on how I condition my hair, I hope this has been useful or at least interesting.
