Take My Money

I think I can safely say that I don't listen to chart music, sure every now and then a song is catchy enough but I can't say that I have been interested in much music wise in the last year or so. Earlier today I watched a music video, Hello Kitty - Avril Lavigne. An artist that at one time in my life I rather admired, she had catchy riffs and her lyrics were easy to remember and fun to sing along to. I never felt that was much more to the music just some 'feelgood' (or not at times) teen tunes. Avril Lavigne is now a 29 year old musician, on her second marriage, and still producing music...good on her, right?

Well what in the hell is this?! I won't lie the title alone had me a little worried, but I thought I would persevere...mistake. It is an awful song, a hideous clash of poppy nonsense with ridiculous lyrics. I like a weird music video but this did not live up to how terrible the track is. As I stuck out the 3 and a bit minutes of 'Hello Kitty' I had the same thing running around over and over in my head...'Who let her do this?' Who told her she was really on to something here and that teenagers the world over would love this track? Who let her use their recording studio to make this? I don't want to underpin the entire decline in quality of the popular music culture industry onto Avril Lavigne, but I feel the efforts of this track highlight it rather well.

It is unfortunate, I have always had a love for music and the further away from 'pop' I find myself listening (at the moment) the more I enjoy it. Pop music hasn't always been this terrible right? I was always a McFly fan and I find myself on the odd occasion, singing along to some awfully cheesy 90's pop, but I still think its great (no matter how cheesy) Hello Kitty, on the other hand, is not cheesy. I hate to use the word because I feel it doesn't do my point justice but the song as a whole is cringey. It makes me screw my face up and my skin crawl....If you haven't seen it, maybe you need to...
